Total Weight
Weighted vests will vary in weight capacity. Luckily, there is a simple and safe rule to follow when using a weighted vest for running. The 10% Rule. A weighted running vest should add no more than 10% of your body weight to be highly effective for increasing speed, endurance and strength while minimizing damage to your joints.
Fit & Comfort
The placement of the weights on the vest is one of the most important factors in determining which vest to go with. How is the weight distributed along the vest? What types of weights are they? Weight vests that use heavy metal plates may be great for strength building but they can be totally uncomfortable when running. Instead of large bulky weights, opt for multiple smaller weights that are evenly distributed around the vest, especially above the abdomen. Unrestricted movement is critical to a good running workout, so minimize the pounding and get a vest that is a slim with a tight fit to eliminate bouncing.
Material
Any good workout involves a healthy amount of sweat. Weighted running vests will take sweating to another level. That being said, breathable and moisture absorbent material is a must. Some weight vests come with moisture resistant liners and hydration ready shoulder and back liners as well. This type of material will absorb some, but not all, of the moisture that is guaranteed to develop as you get more intense with your workouts.
